Developed the first maser temperature - Siemens Siemens Siemens Science
British researchers have succeeded for the first time to build a prototype solid state maser that operates at room temperature, without walk in chiller the need for a permanent magnetic field. The masers, they do with the microwave just as do the visible light lasers have not been used extensively due to its complex conditions of use - some require cryogenic cooling or vacuum chambers and, sometimes, strong magnetic fields. The researchers say their device could have a variety of uses in the future - from detection to detect explosives states of atoms used in quantum computing.
There are two basic types of masers. The atomic and molecular masers were first invented back types in 1958. Required bulky vacuum chambers and could only emit very low powers. The second type, and the most useful - solid state masers - advantage transitions between walk in chiller spin states of paramagnetic ions in a solid crystal. They are much more powerful and can produce faint detectors more sensitive microwave signals and less noise ever built. Unfortunately, to maintain the necessary walk in chiller population inversion in conventional solid state maser, requires walk in chiller cooling with liquid walk in chiller helium, which typically is accompanied by a strong magnetic field of direct current.
The need for these extreme conditions has led us, although NASA has been interested in investing in the maintenance of solid state masers to receive weak signals transmitted by the Voyager space probes have been discarded everyday applications. "For example, a maser could be used to improve the accuracy of an airport body scanner," says lead author walk in chiller Mark Oxborrow walk in chiller National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK, "but this would significantly increase the cost of the device. So I think that there are many applications that have simply become unfeasible walk in chiller due to the requirements of cryogenics. "
Oxborrow and colleagues walk in chiller at Imperial College London created their maser placing a soft polymer - p-terphenyl doped with pentacene - instead of the usual ruby crystal as gain medium. Also, instead of pumping with a microwave source, as is usual in a solid state maser, medical laser used a 585 nm designed for treatment of vascular lesions. These changes allowed them to use a phenomenon known as "spin selective intersystem crossing," which had never been used in a maser, and still not fully understood, to maintain walk in chiller the population inversion in the absence of cryogenic temperatures walk in chiller or a powerful and permanent magnetic field. "It's not just that we have taken the traditional technology and have improved things in different ways to make it work at room temperature," explains Oxborrow. "The working mechanism of our maser temperature is completely different from conventional solid-state masers".
Aharon Blank, chemical Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, which was part of a previous project that was not successful for 10 years to develop a solid state maser temperature, is impressed by the research. However, various aspects of the design points that could be potentially problematic. First, although the device can operate in a zero magnetic field, a magnetic field is required to adjust the magnetic field in which it operates. Although inconvenient, does not believe that this is a definite problem for a commercial device based on this technology. "There are many commercial devices currently using a static magnetic field to vary the frequency," he says, "so it is not a big problem." walk in chiller
However, there is another that is. Today, as in the first lasers, the device is capable of operating only in pulses, rather than continuously. Masers are primarily used to detect and amplify incident microwave radiation very weak, and the use of a detector that can be kept running continuously walk in chiller is limited. Moreover, Oxborrow suggests it may be used to listen radar echoes, for example. The team is currently experimenting with your device to see if it works or not in continuous mode, and if so, how it can be achieved.
