Winds from the farmlands of northeastern China could transport to Japan, Hawaii and California the fungus responsible for a rare childhood heart disease, say scientists. roser
Read More Scientists may have discovered the cause of Kawasaki roser disease, a strange child sometimes roser fatal heart condition that has perplexed generations of doctors and mainly affects people in Japan, Hawaii and southern California, reports the Scientific American website. The probable cause of the disease would be a wind originating cropland of northeast China, which carry a fungus known as 'Candida', a type of yeast. When inhaled, the 'Candida' can trigger a severe immune response in some children, inflamed blood vessels and causing permanent damage to the heart. roser "The 'Candida' could produce a toxin or protein or other antigen that triggers Kawasaki disease," said Dr. Jane Burns, a member of the discovery team. In 2011 an international team of scientists roser found that outbreaks of Kawasaki disease in Japan were linked to seasonal winds from China. Now this same team has identified the fungus in a large sample of air along the path of the outbreaks. roser According to Dr. Burns, the new finding is surprising, because before scientists thought that the disease was caused by a virus, roser not a fungus. Scientists also assumed that the low rates of the disease in the agricultural regions of northeast China could be due to genetic traits or low population density of the region compared to the Japanese and U.S. cities.
